The Honourable Judge Michael Hicks (Retired)

Judge Hicks received a Bachelor of Law from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia and a Master of Laws, 1975, from Kings College, University of London, England. He practiced law from 1976- 2005, in private practice, with the Canadian Department of External Affairs, and with the BC Ministry of the Attorney General.

During his years as Crown Counsel he conducted trials, provided training for Crown Lawyers, victim’s services staff and Police in a variety of areas of substantive and procedural criminal law. He has spoken at training programs conducted for the Provincial bar admission program. Judge Hicks served as the Deputy Regional Crown and Regional Crown of Vancouver until his appointment in 2005 as a Judge of the Provincial Court of British Columbia.

Judge Hicks was the first person to join the Justice Education Society's Guyana Criminal Justice Strengthening project team. The Canadian High Commission and US Embassy invited Judge Hicks to Guyana in January 2015 to engage with stakeholders in the development of a justice reform project. His report served as the foundations on which the two subsequent JES projects in Guyana were developed. After he retired from the Bench, Judge Hicks was instrumental in organizing and presenting at the Guyana  judicial study tour visit to Vancouver, Canada in October 2016 and 2018. Judge Hicks was involved in co-presenting the a case management seminar, two seminars for police, prosecutors and judges on forensic video evidence, coaching for the magistrates and conducting a project evaluation.

Following his retirement, Judge Hicks also volunteered for two Habitat for Humanity projects in Africa and Asia.
